Like others, I was skeptical. I rarely play GTA games to any sort of completion - what I mainly enjoy is poking around, finding places, looking at stuff. How could the little cart on the 66MHz dual screen ever hope to hold enough data to keep my interest? The actual problem turns out to be, how can I force myself to stop playing?

There are a lot of GTA elements in this wonder that are actually much better than in any other episode. Driving cars is more fun, since they actually have a responsive turning radius. Getting into and out of trouble is more fun, since you can shake off your wanted level by wiping out cop cars. The missions are more fun, since the controls (mostly) actually do what you want (TBH, I suck at GTA missions, so being able to complete these is a revelation). There are more places to stunt and jump. Falling in the water is not an automatic death sentence! That’s worth the price of admission right there.

At first I thought the whole PDA/GPS touch screen business would be nothing but frustration. But as you learn to use it, it almost becomes a game in itself. I think Rockstar ought to seriously consider creating a real PDA app for the DS out of what they have here.

The real addictive part of the game, and I’m almost ashamed to admit it, is the drug trafficking. When I read about that feature I thought…hmm, unsavory - perhaps I can get along without that. But it turns out to be impossible to stop. If Rockstar were to be honest, they might have called the game Sim DrugDealer.

There are other fun and funny touches. Driving around you will come across random people who need help. Your character always has fun at their expense, and those side missions can be just as heart-pounding as the regular missions. And no longer do you have to rely on serendipity to get some heavy firepower - every gas station allows you to assemble molatovs which can be used to wreak all sorts of havoc.

I’m sure there are things I haven’t even found yet. As testament to how good the game is, about 75% of my GTA time is usually spent driving taxi missions. So far I haven’t been bored enough to resort to that. If there was ever a game that justifies the purchase of a DS, this is it.
